Hatters attacker Harry Cornick is remaining hopeful he can still hit his mystery target of goals should the season restart once more.

When Town played their last game before the campaign was postponed indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic, the 24-year-old was up to eight goals from his 39 outings.

That was level with his most prolific season to date, managed when on loan at Yeovil in 2015-16 and also during Town’s title-winning League One term last year.

When answering questions from the Hatters academy players for the club’s YouTube page, Cornick said: “I haven’t told anyone my target, but lets say I’ve not hit it yet.

“Hopefully if the season continues I will hit it at some point, but I’m keeping that to myself.

“I’m very happy with how my season has gone personally so far.

“It’s gutting that the season has had to be stopped for now, but obviously there’s more important things in the world than football, and people’s health around the world has been put into priority which is rightly so.

“Hopefully we can get cracking in a few weeks or months time, however long it might be and get back to it.”

Cornick admitted he had done plenty of extra work on his shooting this season, especially under the guidance of former manager Graeme Jones, who was a forward of some repute himself in his playing days.

The attacker continued: “I’ve worked on my finishing quite a lot this year.

"Before Graeme left he kept me out after training sessions working on my finishing, a lot of one-on-ones, which I feel like I’m getting better at.

“It’s hard to recreate what it’s like in a game, going through one-on-one when in training there’s no pressure, there’s no fans.

“You feel like you’ve got composure and you’ve got all the time in the world, you go out and do it in a game environment and it’s a lot different.

“But I’ve been working on the mental side of that as well, which has been important for me this year.

“Working on my psychology behind what I’m doing when I go through one-on-one has been important for me as well.”

When Cornick arrived at Kenilworth Road from Bournemouth back in August 2017, he was exclusively a winger, playing there for the Cherries and also during loan spells with clubs like Gillingham and Leyton Orient.

However, then boss Nathan Jones changed all that around for him, as Cornick stated he played an important part in making him the player he is nowadays.

He said: “I’d say Nathan Jones has been the biggest influence in terms of how he’s made my career and who I am today.

“From being a young lad at Bournemouth, being a winger really who used to play out wide, when I met Nathan Jones for the first time, he basically told me what I was going to be, and everything I thought about what I was, he told me I was the opposite really.

“He changed how I was going to be, so I’m thankful for him to this day.

“He’s probably made me the player I am now, because otherwise I’d still be a winger, plying my trade that way, so Nathan Jones has probably been the biggest influence and changed my career the most.”

With no-one knowing if and when Cornick will get the chance to add to his tally this term, then the attacker has been doing his best to stay fit during lockdown at home.

He added: “Redders (James Redden, head of sport science) gave us a chance to go in and grab some equipment, so we grabbed a bit from the Brache. I got a spin bike, so I’ve been doing a few sessions on that, a few road runs and going down to my local field and doing a few strides.

“We’re just trying to tick over for now and stay fit rather than doing loads and loads and loads, because we don’t know when the season is going to start, and we’ll blow up before the season starts again.

"So we’re just doing some easy work, nothing too crazy.”
