Town attacker Harry Cornick has spoken of the unbelievable team spirit within the club after they won their battle against relegation with a 3-2 victory over Blackburn Rovers on Wednesday night.

Needing a victory to make sure of staying up, Luton had fallen 1-0 behind early on, before both Hayden Carter and Bradley Johnson put through their own net as Town led 2-1 at the break.

James Collins made it 3-1 on the hour mark from the penalty spot for a foul on Cornick, as although Rovers pulled one back with 15 to go, the Hatters held on to secure their second tier status for another year.

Cornick said: “It’s a crazy one, we went 1-0 down, it was a bit annoying, a bit gutting, but the spirit in this team, we knew we were going to bounce back, we knew we were going to get the result.

"We didn’t want to concede, we wanted to win three or four nil, but we went 1-0 down and the spirit from the lads was terrific.

“We bounced back straight away, got two goals, went into the lead and I think we deserved the win, we were brilliant and deserved to stay up

“We’ve been building up to this for the last nine games, and it was a big relief to get it done.

“There’s a group in that changing room that’s unbelievable, the spirit in that changing room is something special.

"It’s hard to describe how everyone feels in there, but we all work so hard for each other and I think we deserve this.

"We deserve to be in the Championship, we think we're a Championship side and it’s on to the next season to kick on.

“I’m just buzzing for all the lads, buzzing for myself, buzzing for Luton Town as a club as we’re staying in the Championship.”

Not many gave Town much of a chance of staying up once lockdown ended, as they were trailing safety by six points, seven if you include the goal difference.

However, a magnificent run of 16 points from 27, including three wins in their final four games was enough to finish two points clear of the drop zone, sending Hull City, Charlton Athletic and Wigan Athletic down.

Cornick continued: “That’s the Luton way really, against the odds.

“Everyone wrote us off, everyone thought we were going down and we knew we could get results.

“As soon as we came back in, played the first three games, picked up some points, we knew we could do it and we just had to stick together.”

Town did it with Nathan Jones in charge as the former boss, who returned in May, masterminded the Hatters' final day great escape.

Cornick added: "He’s been brilliant, it's nice to see a face you already know come back.

"We were in good form before he came in, but he takes great credit.

"He galvanises players, he gets the best out of players, it’s delightful.

"He’s been brilliant and he’s been good for me, good for the team, he’s a good manager.

“He’s been here before, he knows all the players and he’s a great man manager.

"He galvanises players, he give us confidence we need.

"The aim now is to build as a team, to not be in the position next year and who knows what can happen?

“We’ll celebrate now though as it’s a great achievement to the club."
