Cuthbert urges Hatters to build on Grecians triumph

Luton ended a run of four straight defeats with a victory thanks to striker Paul Benson’s injury-time winner last Saturday, to give them a confidence boost going into the festive period.

Cuthbert said: “It’s massive, it gives you a platform to build on especially with Andy (Awford) taking over for however long he will.

“It’s nice for him to get off the mark as caretaker manager and hopefully it will give all the lads a little boost and a little bit of positivity about the place.

“We can look forward to Wycombe at home, a big Boxing Day crowd and hopefully get another positive result.”

Luton were booed off during their last time at Kenilworth Road after a 4-3 defeat to Northampton, which was previous boss John Still’s last game in charge.

Over 400 supporters still made the trek to Exeter last weekend though and Cuthbert wants to reward them once more as he looks to climb the League Two table.

He continued: “They’ve been through a lot in the past 12 months, it’s been a bit of an up and down 12 months.

“They always back us and I was absolutely delighted we were able to send them away with a smile on their face for the first time in a few weeks.

“We’ve just got take each game as it comes now, we got the three points against Exeter, it’s good to get a positive result.

“We’ve got to put league out of our mind at the moment, take Wycombe, hopefully get three points there, then we look to the next game and just keep on trying to win games.

“It doesn’t matter how you do it, just get as many points as you can.”

Defender Jake Howells was delighted to play a part in Luton ending their poor run of form and believes his side can build some momentum now.

He said: “It has been tough, but it’s more tough watching the team that you love to pieces not doing so great and you can’t give anything to it.

“But we’re Luton Town and it’s never easy. Hopefully this is the start of a good run, we know we can do it and it’s a long way to go now.”

Finally, caretaker boss Andy Awford hopes the way in which Hatters won at Exeter will spell a change in fortune for the club after conceding a host of last-minute goals so far this term.

He added: “I’ve watched a lot of games this year and especially the first part of the year we seemed to have heartbreak at the end of the game so maybe its turned a little.

“We deserved that little bit of luck for earlier in the season, I remember playing against Portsmouth and the Oxford game, two that spring to mind.

“We’ve had our fair share of hard luck stories over the season, so maybe its evened out a little bit.”
