Decision time for Mackail-Smith

Hatters boss John Still is expecting a decision on the future of striker Craig Mackail-Smith by the end of the week.

The 31-year-old has been training with Luton during the pre-season campaign, featuring in the games against Boreham Wood, Hitchin and then Gosport Borough on Monday night.

Hatters have made an offer to the former Brighton and Peterborough man, with Still saying: “We’ve always looked at this week being the week where we decide, A: Do we want to make him an offer, and, B: Is he going to accept the offer?

“Talks have been really amicable if I’m honest and this week things will evolve on where we’re going.”

There was speculation last week that League One Southend United wanted to acquire Mackail-Smith’s services, with boss Phil Brown hoping he would play for the Shrimpers in a friendly.

Still confirmed there had been interest in the striker, but nothing to tempt him, saying: “Craig has spoken to other clubs and been very open with clubs who have asked.

“But there is nothing that has come along that he wants to do other than Luton at the moment.”
