Luton striker James Collins is determined to win his place back in the Republic of Ireland squad this season.

The 29-year-old forward was called up for the first time back in November 2019 when Mick McCarthy was in charge, making his debut in the 3-1 win over New Zealand.

He then scored his maiden international goal in the 3-1 win over Bulgaria last season and has won four caps in total so far.

However, McCarty then left his role in April this year, with U21s boss Stephan Kenny coming in, who proceeded to drop Collins from the squad for the Nations League clashes with Bulgaria and Finland, with Ireland taking just one point from the two games.

Collins responded in the perfect manner with a hat-trick as Luton beat Norwich City 3-1 in the Carabao Cup and knows he needs to stay in the goals to continue representing his country,

The striker said: “As any player would be, I was obviously really disappointed I wasn’t involved but I’ve got to respect the manager's decision.

"He (Stephen Kenny) gave me his reasons why and I’ve got to take it on the chin.

"He went a different way and all I can do to get back into the squad is keep producing for my club and hopefully today will prove that I’m good enough.

"All I can do to get back in that squad now is keep scoring goals and performing for Luton, that’s what I’m trying to do."
