Former Luton captain Alan Sheehan has been released by Northampton Town.

The 34-year old, who skippered the Hatters to promotion to the Championship from League Two, made 135 appearances and scored nine goals in his four years at Kenilworth Road, leaving in March 2020.

He moved to Lincoln, playing once for the Red Imps, before heading to the PTS Academy Stadium in October 2020.

Sheehan featured 15 times for the Cobblers last season, netting once, but suffered with injury and was unable to help keep the club in the division, his last match coming in the 3-0 defeat at Hull on April 5.

Northampton boss Jon Brady told the Town official website: "It’s a job that has to be done but it’s never nice.

“Some of the players we’ve let go have been unfortunate with injuries or some haven’t had the opportunities they would perhaps have liked but we have to re-build and be stronger next season.

“Yes we were relegated but what I can’t fault is the attitude of the players which has been excellent.

“It’s tough for a footballer being out of contract and especially during these times.

“We have got to be sympathetic of that and if they want my help I will do all I can to help them find a new club.

"Every player moving on parts on good terms and we wish them well.”

The club have offered a new deal to former Luton centre half Lloyd Jones though, after he impressed during his 27 appearances following a move to the club in December.
