Newell became Luton manager in June 2003, leading the Hatters to the League One title in 2005, and then earning a 10th placed finish in the Championship, Town's highest finish since they were relegated from the top flight in 1992.

He was sacked in March 2007, before being unveiled as Grimsby Town boss in October 2008.

Newell left a year later, having spells as a coach at Accrington Stanley and then head of football with Saudi Arabian club Al-Shabab, heading to Wrexham as assistant in December 2018, departing the Racecourse Ground in February 2019.
