Gnakpa and Asafu-Adjaye look to finish the job

GOALSCORERS Ed Asafu-Adjaye and Claude Gnakpa have both warned that the Hatters are only halfway to Eastlands following their stunning 3-0 win at Wrexham on Thursday night, writes Mark Wood.

Having struggled in recent history in the first round of two-legged ties the Hatters turned on the style to thump Wrexham at the Racecourse Ground, but know they must still finish the job at Kenilworth Road on Tuesday evening.

Asafu-Adjaye who was delighted to score his first-ever senior goal to make it 3-0, said: “We are only halfway there, but it’s a good halfway point. Fingers crossed we can build on that on Tuesday night. I don’t think we will sit back on a 3-0 lead, but push forward and seal the game off.

“There could have been many more goals in there for us. When we take it home on Tuesday we need to come straight out of the blocks get a goal early on and take it from there. I can’t wait.”

And he admitted it made a welcome change to come away from a first leg tie in the ascendancy, saying: “The dressing room and coach journey home will be a very pleasant one.

“The last two away legs of ties have been very gutting to go away from and this will be very different.”

The young full-back also urged the Hatters faithful to get behind them and push them over the finishing line, saying: “If we can get a full house there on Tuesday night to be a 12th man behind us it will make it easier for us to seal the game off as early in the game as possible.”

Wing wizard Gnakpa netted an important second after Alex Lawless had given the Hatters the lead and, although he felt he faded second half he was unsurprised by the Hatters’ victory.

Gnakpa said: “He did well (the full-back marking him) to be honest in the second half. I probably wasn’t at my best in the second half. I’m sure at home it will be a different game.

“To be honest yes (I knew we could win), I was happy to come here and win. We came here to win but to win that way is brilliant.”

And he is aiming to finish the job with victory at Kenilworth Road, adding: “It will be a full house in the second leg. We are halfway from Manchester and it’s important to win at home in front of our fans.”
