The 23-year-old forward moved to Championship side Brentford for a fee of more than £500,000 ending a stay with Town where he scored 57 goals in 111 games.

Speaking exclusively to the News/Gazette, Gray said: “It was an emotional time.

“I spoke to Luton and they said we’ve regrettably accepted it, and I was saying ‘I want to do it’.

“But when it actually came along, it was a sad day and quite difficult to accept I was going to leave, there were mixed emotions.”

Gray bagged 30 goals as Town romped to the Skrill Premier title, winning the golden boot award.

Speculation had been rife about his future, but Gray confirmed he would have been happy to be part of Town’s League Two squad had nothing materialised.
