Grimsby chairman won’t sell Connell to Luton

GRIMSBY Town chairman John Fenty has reiterated his stance that highly-sought after frontman Alan Connell will not be joining Luton Town, writes Mike Simmonds.

The 28-year-old netted 25 Blue Square Bet Premier goals last season, and Hatters have confirmed they have made a bid for the former Brentford and Hereford forward.

Fenty turned down Luton’s offer, branding it derisory though, and took further steps this week,to distance the player from a move to Kenilworth Road.

He said: “I can state categorically that Alan Connell will not be playing for Luton Town next season.

“Unless we get an unbelievable offer of funny money we cannot contemplate a move that would only help our rivals’ cause.

“I have seen what Luton said about Alan being keen on a move there.

“It’s a horrible way to carry on to speak about another club’s player like that.

“It appears there has been contact with the agent and if there has it is out of order because Alan is contracted to us.

“As far as I am aware, Alan is happy to stay at Grimsby Town next season.

“The managers explained the Luton offer and he didn’t seem that interested in going there as I understand.”

Fenty did concede that the striker, who has 12 months left on his contract, has mentioned his desire to return to the Football League, but that no-one above the Conference had come calling as of yet.

He added: “Alan has made it clear he would like to be back in League football.

“But there has been no offer from any League club.

“Unless there is an offer from a League club, there is nothing for us to consider and Alan remains here where we want him and will be here on August 13 when the season begins.

“I can say again we are not looking to sell a player who was our top scorer last season.

“Alan has talked with the managers about the new season and is happy to be here.

“I hope this puts the matter firmly to bed and we can all look forward to the new season.”
