Guttridge: The best is yet to come

Hatters midfielder Luke Guttridge believes his best is yet to come after making a playing return ahead of schedule.

The 32-year-old missed the tail end of last season after breaking his metatarsal against Alfreton on March 1, but has managed four appearances this term.

He was the game-changer against Accrington at the weekend, as his eye-catching arrival after 20 minutes heralded a fight back in which Luton salvaged a point.

On his ongoing recovery, Guttridge said: “I still don’t feel up to speed if I’m being completely truthful.

“I always push myself to the maximum and probably train when I shouldn’t and play games ahead of fitness levels.

“But I sat down with someone and it’s the best part of six months since I played.

“I still feel like I’ve got a little way to go, not so much on fitness, more sharpness on the ball, crisper passing.

“There were a few times (against Accrington) I’ve underhit a few passes which is frustrating for my part.

“But I know the more games I can play, the longer I can go and the fitter and stronger I can get, the better my performances will be.”

Despite admitting he was not quite at peak fitness, Guttridge didn’t want to be missing any of Town’s League Two campaign, although he is still expecting to face plenty of discomfort in his quest for full match sharpness.

Meanwhile, boss John Still added: “We want Luke Guttridge to play as many games as possible this year.

“We have to be careful as he’s been out for some time, but I felt it was the right time for him and so it proved.”
