Guttridge tips McGeehan to break into Canaries first team

The pair became close during McGeehan’s loan spell at Kenilworth Road last season, with the 20-year-old admitting to the News/Gazette that Guttridge had been like a mentor to him.

The Northern Ireland U21 international will now turn out against Luton this weekend for Cambridge United though as Guttridge said: “I’m delighted for him. He’s a lovely lad, I got on very well with him and think he’ll have a top career in the game.

“I went and watched him recently and he played in a different position, sat in front of the back four and I was very impressed.

“If he doesn’t soon go back and play in the Norwich first team, I’ll be amazed.”

McGeehan is just one of the many connections between the two sides, as Guttridge is no stranger himself to the U’s fans, having made over 150 appearances for Cambridge between 2000-2005.

On the clash itself, he continued: “There’s a bit of rivalry between the two clubs.

“I’ll look at it is as they’ve been doing well and hopefully with the game on Tuesday (against Manchester United), it could be a good time to play them.

“There should be a good atmosphere with the old manager (Richard Money) coming back, so it’s a bit of spice for the fans.

“It should be a good crowd, players coming back and Cameron returning, who I think the fans took to, so it should be a good day.”

On his role at the weekend, Guttridge, who completed his first 90 minutes since the 4-2 FA Cup win over Newport on November 8 during Tuesday night’s Beds Cup thrashing of Stotfold, added: “I’ve no idea what the manager’s going to do. I’m certainly not expecting to be starting, maybe on the bench.

“I’ve got myself to a level where I can be available so it’s up to the manager what he wants to do.”
