Hatters boss not settled on his first choice side yet

TOWN manager Gary Brabin is yet to settle on his first choice starting line-up after Hatters were held to a disappointing 2-2 draw by Kettering on Tuesday night, writes Mike Simmonds.

The boss made four changes to the side that drew 3-3 with Kidderminster Harriers on Saturday, including a starting berth up front for Amari Morgan-Smith.

The play-offs are now just seven games away, but when asked if he knew his strongest team, Brabin said: “Not at this stage, I want to get more out of the players we’ve got.

“I can see them starting to flourish a little bit. Jason Walker was back in again, Claude (Gnakpa), Robbie Willmott were a real threat all night.

“Amari Morgan-Smith got a goal, there were loads and loads of pleasing aspects for me, but from a personal point of view, I’m absolutely gutted we haven’t won.

“Collectively I want us to start winning games, but it will take time. I’m 100 per cent confident we’re going to get there and I hope people can believe we’re heading in the right direction.”

Jake Howells and Morgan-Smith were both on target for Town, and Brabin was quick to praise his goalscorers.

He said: “I thought his (Morgan-Smith’s) general game was good.

“It was more like the Morgan-Smith that we know. He worked hard, was holding the ball up and some of his movement was great.

“It was a good finish and I’m made up for him.

“Jake’s been fantastic and he thoroughly deserved the man of the match.

“He’s made some great probing runs forward and linked up well with Robbie Willmott.”

Although Hatters have won just once in eight league and cup games, Brabin believes they are starting to get to grips with his mentality.

He added: “First and foremost, we have to get back to playing good football and scoring goals.

“We’ve got to cement our play-off spot but equally important is getting the best out of these players.

“We’re definitely moving in the right direction in an attacking point of view, certain individuals are coming to the fore and it’s really about confidence as a team.”

Winger Claude Gnakpa had to come off late on and is a doubt for Saturday, while striker Danny Crow should know the results of scans on his injured knee by then.

Brabin added: “Claude – we don’t know the full extent, but he’s struggling a bit with his calf.

“I thought Claude ran his socks off and that was Claude at his best, hopefully we caught it in time.

“Danny has had his scan, but we won’t find out until Wednesday.”
