Hatters confirm Walker on verge of joining York

York announced on Friday they had snapped up the 27-year-old, but although Luton confirmed they had accepted an offer of £60,000, they also admitted the deal wasn’t officially completed yet,

According to Luton, Walker, who scored six goals since signing from Barrow in November, contacted Hatters boss Gary Brabin by text message to let him know of his desire to move to York after his family had struggled to settle in Bedfordshire.

The striker, who missed a penalty in the Blue Square Bet Premier Play-Off Final defeat against AFC Wimbledon, is now expected to be unveiled at Bootham Crescent early next week.

Manager Gary Brabin is hoping to use the money gained from Walker’s impending sale to strengthen his forward line further after already capturing Rushden & Diamonds captain Aaron O’Connor and Northampton Town defender Dean Beckwith.

He said: “I’ve always known that improving the forward line was the most important aspect of my efforts in the transfer market this summer.

“Jason’s impending move to York has reinforced this and will give me a real opportunity to bring in a player to score the goals to fire us to promotion.”

City manager Gary Mills was delighted with the prospect of signing Walker, as he added: “He is a player that I have admired for a long time. When I first saw him play for Barrow I was impressed.

“He is a goal scorer and works hard for the team, he has a great desire for the game. I felt that we needed more fire power going into this season and we have concentrated on that.

“Good strikers don’t come cheaply and they are hard to find and we have had to pay a good fee for him but that shows the ambition of the club and the chairman. I rate Jason Walker very highly.”
