Luton Town could be able to welcome fans back into Kenilworth Road from October after Prime Minister Boris Johnson set out plans to further ease lockdown measures this morning.

The Hatters have had to play their final nine games of the Championship season behind closed doors due to the coronavirus pandemic preventing large gatherings of people potentially spreading the virus between them.

However, when laying out the next steps in lifting lockdown earlier today, Johnson said: "We will pilot larger gatherings in venues like sports stadiums with a view to a wider reopening in the autumn," said Johnson on Friday.

"From October, we intend to bring back audiences in stadiums.

"Again, these changes must be done in a Covid-secure way, subject to the successful outcome of pilots."

The news means that it could only be the first month of the 2020-21 season, which is pencilled in to start in September, will be played out behind closed doors, with supporters allowed back in from October onwards.

Town are currently battling for their Championship survival, knowing that if they win their remaining two games, starting at Hull tomorrow, they will be in the second tier once more next term.
