The Hatters will be cheered on by a superb 2,689 fans at Fratton Park, with the crowd expected to be around the 18,000 mark.

Lawless said: “That just eggs us on as if you look at the support they’ve got too. It will be a proud moment for us to go and play in front of so many of our fans in a place like that.

“It’s a fixture at the start of the season that all the lads want to be involved in, it will be a nice game to go and try and win.”

Although Luton have struggled badly on their travels in recent weeks, winning just once away from home since October 18, a run of 12 games, Lawless believes they can turn that around on the south coast.

He continued: “I think early in the season and over last 18 months we’ve shown that we can go and win games like that.

“Yes they’re hard games on paper and we’ve had a few defeats, but we’re not going into games like that thinking like that.

“We’re more than equipped to go into those games and not just think about coming away with the result, but actually winning.

“Our aim will be to go and get ourselves back to winning ways.”
