The visitors had led 2-0 at the break through Ollie Watkins’ double, only for Town to hit back through Tahith Chong and Carlton Morris, as they looked like earning a point at the very least. However, Lucas Digne headed home late on to steal the points, and to find out how the Hatters players rated on the evening, see below.
5. Amari’i Bell: N/A
Was always a massive doubt after going off against Manchester City in midweek and in hindsight probably shouldn’t have started as he pulled up within the opening five minutes and had to be replaced, potentially now facing a longer spell on the sidelines. Photo: Liam Smith
6. Alfie Doughty: 7
Struggled in the first period as with the early injury to Bell it saw him drop into the back three where he never really looked comfortable. The introduction of Hashioka early in the second period changed things as he was able to return to his preferred left wingback role. Set-pieces then saw Luton get back in it, his corner leading to Chong scoring and a perfectly delivered free kick picking out Morris for the second. Might be disappointed he didn't get out quicker to block Diaby's cross for the gut-wrenching winner. Photo: Liam Smith
7. Ross Barkley: 7.5
Saw plenty of the ball at times in the first period, but the play was far too slow, not many of his team-mates making any incisive runs off him as he resorted to trying raking crossfield passes that the Villa defence could easily snuff out. With the intensity raised after the break, it allowed him to move things far more quicker and get Luton going faster. Some cracking sliding challenges, he also added another simply stunning piece of skill to his ever growing highlights reel with a mesmerising spin away from two players. Photo: Liam Smith
8. Jordan Clark: 6.5
Luton's midfield didn't get much of a look in during a first half in which Villa had their number, able to hold on to possession and cut through their hosts to create a number of inviting chances, taking two of them. With nothing to lose after the break, the Hatters came into things far more, as having got it back to 2-2, his first time cross saw Morris get up well for an opportunity saved by Martinez. No real chance to replicate his wonder goal against City on this occasion unfortunately. Photo: Liam Smith
