Hatters sign Connolly

Luton Town have won the race to sign experienced right-back Paul Connolly on a free transfer.

The 30-year-old has penned an initial one-year deal and turned down offers from clubs in League One to move to Kenilworth Road.

Connolly began his career at Plymouth, making over 150 appearances, before joining Derby where he was a regular in the Championship, while also captaining the Pride Park club.

He then had spells at Sheffield United, Leeds, Portsmouth, Preston, Millwall and Crawley, before becoming Luton’s fifth addition of the summer.

Speaking to the club’s official website, boss John Still said: “It was always my intention when Ronnie (Henry) left to have someone of knowledge and experience in that position.

“However it’s always about finding the right one. It’s easy to just go out and get any old player. You should never rush things.

“We had three of four people in mind for that position and we wanted an experienced one and a younger one.

“We’ve got the younger one in Curtley (Williams) and now we’ve added Paul as the experienced one.

“We were a bit bare at right back last season because we couldn’t find the right one. Now we’ve been able to bring in somebody of Paul’s ability and experience which is fantastic. He’ll be a good addition for us.”

Connolly added: “Luton was a club I earmarked to come to in the summer. It’s probably only one of three clubs in the division I would sign for.

“It’s one of the biggest clubs in the league so it’s a no brainer. I’m at the stage of my career where I wanted to be playing for a club that is moving in the right direction and not just sitting still.

“It’s going to be great being a part of what the manager is trying to achieve. I’ve been fortunate to play for some really big clubs in my career and I’m delighted to now add Luton to that list.”

Connolly passed his medical at the Town’s Ely Way training ground on Saturday before joining in his first session with his new team-mates.
