Hayrettin felt Barnett should have been dismissed

Hatters first team coach Hakan Hayrettin felt that Oxford United striker Tyrone Barnett was lucky to escape a red card during Town’s 2-0 win on Saturday.

The on-loan Peterborough frontman slid in dangerously on Luton debutant Nathan Doyle just after the hour mark, but was only shown yellow by referee Mark Haywood.

Hayrettin said: “From where we were, it looked like his feet were both off the ground and both high.

“The interpretation of the referee from his angle was different, but from where I was, it looked like it was a red card.

“We asked the fourth (official) and he actually agreed with what we saw, but there’s only one person who can make his mind up and ponder on what what he saw.

“He thought it wasn’t a red, I thought it was a straight red personally, but there you go.”

Doyle himself didn’t want to be drawn on the incident as he continued: “That’s the referees decision, they have to make decisions that come round quickly.

“He’s booked him for a yellow, other people might think another decision might have been chosen, but I don’t really want to say anything about it in case I get in trouble.

“The game is all about opinions. The ref gave a yellow card, he thought he won the ball, I thought it was a foul and 9,000 fans probably have different views on it as well, so his thoughts and my thoughts are irrelevant.

“It was a knock on the ankle, but a little bit of ice and should be okay.”

Defender Luke Wilkinson thought the decision could have gone either way as he added: “He got off the floor high and didn’t go two footed, went one footed.

“What helped him was he did actually win the ball plus catching Doyley.

“So I think that the ref’s taken that into consideration and just booked him so, but another day the ref might have shown a red.”
