Howells refuses to panic

FULL-BACK Jake Howells insists the wins will start to come for Luton Town despite conceding an injury-time goal for the second match running on Tuesday night, writes Mike Simmonds.

Kettering Town followed Kidderminster Harriers’ lead at the weekend by netting late on, to deny Hatters a welcome three points.

Howells said: “It happens in football. We played well. It wasn’t like we went out there and had a bad game and were lucky to get a draw.

“We deserved to win and we deserved to win the last game as well.

“I think the lads know we’re playing well, it’s not like we’re in bad form.

“The defence has done really well this season too, got loads of clean sheets, so I can’t fault it at all.

“We’ll go again on Saturday and hopefully win that game.”

Howells himself was in excellent form on Tuesday night, scoring his third goal of the season as his partnership on the left flank with Robbie Willmott shows real signs of promise.

He said: “Robbie’s a good lad, he works very hard for the team and is a good player.

“He knows if I’m going round him he’ll put me in, but doesn’t always have to use me too.

“We are linking up well and have got a good combination going.”

For the goal, pictured left, Howells continued: “I saw there was a big gap and luckily enough got there, went on and finished it off.”

Howells also played a major part in Amari Morgan-Smith’s second half goal, and said: “I saw the right-back head it out and thought I’m going to beat the right midfielder to the ball.

“I got there, played a one-two with Robbie and saw Amari come back a bit and thought I’d pull it back for him and it’s a good finish from Amari.”

Town are back at home on Saturday when they host Southport, who beat them 2-1 last month.

Howells added: “They’re a very good team, a good little passing team and got a few good little players in there.

“It’s not going to be easy, they beat us up there, so when they come down here, we’ll hopefully do them over.”
