The 23-year-old, who has played 276 times for the club, enjoyed one of his best seasons to date last year as Town romped to the Conference title.

Howells, who made his debut in May 2008, told the club’s official website: “I am very happy to be extending my contract at Luton.

“It’s what I wanted and now I can’t wait to be playing in the Football League once more.

“It’s great to be back at the training ground, around the boys and we are all raring to get the new season underway.”

Howells follows Steve McNulty in agreeing to extend his stay at Kenilworth Road and boss John Still added: “Jake has been here a long while, he’s an experienced player now and he’s experienced the fantastic season we had last year.

“This is something he’s been waiting for, he’s a Luton boy and has been terrific for this club, terrific for me and I’m delighted he’s accepted a new contract.”
