Out of contract striker Danny Hylton is determined to do everything he can to help the Hatters stay in the Championship this term.

The 31-year-old, who is a free agent in the summer, would be well within his rights to refuse to play for Luton in the final nine games of the campaign, with his deal set to expire, as has happened at other clubs in the Championship.

But Hylton, who has 58 goals in 120 games since arriving from Oxford United in the summer of 2016, is fully committed to the cause, as he said: “From what I get is that the players who are out of contact, we need to be offered a short term contract by a certain date of this month.

“Regardless of the contract situation, I love where I am, I love playing for this club, I’ve loved being here since I’ve been here, so if I’m allowed to play, I’m going to play.

“If there’s any way that I can play or be involved in the last nine games then I’ll do that.

“It’s no different to any other year, you have to do well to get another contract, you don’t do well you’re not going to get a contract, so we’ll do our best to keep Luton up.

“I wish I could have been a part of it more over the last year, but lets hope there’s a big part to play in the last nine games and I’ll certainly be doing everything I can to help Luton stay up.”

No matter what happens though, Hylton would relish the opportunity to remain at Kenilworth Road if at all possible next season, particularly now Nathan Jones has returned as manager.

He continued: “I’d love to stay longer and hopefully that will be the case.

“But you’ve got to be quite unselfish and you’ve got to put the club before yourself at this time and go right, ‘I’m a Luton player, I’ve got a job to do and contracts will take care of themselves at a later date.’

“You can’t plan for these things (coronavirus) can you?

“No-one knew it was coming and this is the situation we find ourselves in.

“We know the rules now, so we’re just going to have to do as best we can.

“I’m sure Luton Town know enough about me and the other lads who are out of contract to know if they want us or if they don’t want us.

“I would love to stay, I’m sure all the other lads will say the same.

"So let’s take care of the games, do as well as we can and personally, fingers crossed, that I can stay here as I don’t want to be anywhere else.”

Nothing has been discussed yet though between Hylton and the club and he believes that is how it should be until Town finally conclude their Championship campaign in late July.

He added: “There’s more important things to sort than our contracts, so he’ll make sure that whoever he wants between now and the end of the season will be tied down.

“I hope I’m here, I hope I can stay, I hope I’ve done enough and they see that I still can offer something to the club.

“But first things first, it’s staying in this division.”
