Luton boss Nathan Jones was happy to be surprised by the quality of striker Elijah Adebayo’s ‘superb’ full Championship debut debut for the club as the forward netted his first goal during the 1-1 draw with Millwall on Tuesday night.

The 23-year-old had already enjoyed an excellent first half, winning a number of headers and providing Town with a real focal point up front before his moment came just 10 minutes into the second period.

Lurking at the back post to receive Ryan Tunncliffe’s cross, the striker demonstrated an excellent first touch on his right foot, before rolling a left-footed effort on goal that went under keeper Bartosz Bialkowski’s dive and into the net.

The forward had only played at League Two level for Cheltenham, Swindon, Stevenage and Walsall, where he had scored 10 times in the fourth tier this season, before moving to Luton for an undisclosed fee on deadline day, so when asked if it was a plus to know he can cut it at the new level, Jones said: “Elijah was superb, we kind of felt that anyway (that he could cope), it’s just we’ve got some decent strikers here.

“He’s bided his time but he gives us something different to what we’ve got and we’re happy with that.

“What we have to do is make sure we don’t get carried away with him.

"He’s still got a lot of work to do and tidy certain things up as if he really had been perfection, he would have scored two and then it would have given us that cushion.

“But we’re delighted with him.

"It was a little bit of a gamble, you don’t know what you’re going to get on a Championship debut from someone you've just bought from League Two without being disrespectful, but sometimes those things can surprise you and I thought he was excellent.”

After making it 1-0 to the Hatters, Adebayo then had a marvellous chance to make it 2-0 after some wonderful wing play by Jordan Clark, only to head over from close range.

Jones continued: “He had a glorious chance back stick to have made it two as well and that would have given us a little bit more of a cushion.

"Clicker put a great ball in exactly where we want him to be and he headed over, so we've got to be clinical, I don't think Matt Smith's (Millwall forward) heading that over."
