Jones wants Hatters to stop searching for the 'perfect goal'

Town chief hopes his side can start scoring some scruffy attempts

Luton boss Nathan Jones feels his side should learn from the likes of Swansea City and not always go chasing the ‘perfect goal’.

At the weekend, the Swans claimed all three points in their 2-0 win over the Hatters with two strikes from outside the box, Connor Roberts’ effort deflecting past James Shea and then Andre Ayew drilling into the bottom corner.

There were times when Luton had the chance to shoot themselves, particularly in the second period, but they turned it down, looking to find a team-mate instead.

Out of Town's last eight goals, only two, Luke Berry's close range finish in the 1-1 draw with Blackburn Rovers and George Moncur's wonderful curler against Norwich have come from open play, with even the latter following a quickly-taken short free kick.

Reflecting on the game in Wales and the work Town do on the training ground to improve their potency, Jones said: "Even when we're down to 10 men we got into great areas and all Ayew did was shift it and shoot.

"We sometimes might need to learn a bit to do that as we try and score the perfect goal at times and these are a good defensive side.

“We work on our attacking play all the time, we really do and it’s just sometimes, some people have it in their mentality.

“You look at Connor Roberts, he’s a player that’s playing with confidence and he scored a couple of weeks ago against (Nottingham) Forest.

“The shot is not going in, in any way, shape or form, until it takes a deflection, but that fact that he’s had the shot meant they got off to the perfect start.

“It was a very fortunate goal, but he did take the shot, and that’s what we have to do at times.

“We do score some very good, fluent goals. We’re very regimented from set plays but sometimes I’d be quite happy to score scruffy goals and deflected goals.

“I saw one the other day with Norwich.

"Because Norwich shoot and pepper the goal, they equalise against Brentford and went on to win the game with a purely deflected shot.

“That’s what happens when you take that and we have to be more positive, in terms of that.

"I want us to be because, I think between both boxes we’re excellent.

"Defensively, on the whole, we’ve been very good, we’ve been adequate attacking-wise, but there’s room for improvement.”
