Keane in the mix and Walker pushes his claims for a place

BALL-WINNING midfielder Keith Keane is back in the mix for Town’s trip to Mansfield tomorrow, writes Mark Wood.

Victory at Field Mill, coupled with other results going Luton’s way, could see the Hatters seal a play-off place and boss Gary Brabin looks set to be able to call on Keane’s services after shaking off the illness and injuries that ruled him out of Tuesday night’s 1-1 draw at champions Crawley.

Brabin said: “Keith has trained again this morning and says he feels a lot better.

“We will see how he is in the morning and he is in the squad for tomorrow.”

Lively attacker Dan Walker is also doing his best to force his way into Brabin’s plans by scoring four goals in Town’s last two reserve team games.

Brabin continued: “Dan is a real, real talent is Dan Walker.

“I’ve spoken a lot about him since I’ve been in the job and he is a cracking player.

“He wants to be part of it and I’ve spoken to him on a couple of occasions and he is a real, real talent.

“He has not done himself any harm with four goals in the last two reserve games.”

Creative striker Danny Crow though is still some way away after suffering knee medial ligament damage.

Brabin said: “He is feeling better every day, but it’s still a while away from us making a decision.”

And although the Town chief is expecting a tough test tomorrow against the Stags, he is adamant the Hatters most focus on themselves.

He said: “It’s going to be another tough encounter and as long as we concentrate on ourselves we should be OK.

“We need all these little tests to put us in good stead for when it really matters.

“We’ve got some really good players as well and I want them playing to their full potential.”

But he still has to be aware of several players who are carrying knocks.

Brabin continued: “You always have one or two you are nursing through with Tuesday, Saturday games coming thick and fast and it’s no different for us.

“We are focused on ourselves. We are trying to do things a little but differently and I think the lads are really relishing it.

“We are seeing some outstanding performances in training and I think they are getter better and better game by game.”

Town played a 4-3-3 formation at Crawley on Tuesday with wingers Claude Gnakpa and Robbie Willmott playing off Jason Walker.

But Brabin admitted he could shake things up a little bit again.

He said: “It could easily be mixed up. I want to try a few things.

“I don’t want to do it for the sake of it and I don’t want to affect the long-term future of the side but I think we need to have a plan B up our sleeve.”

Revenge could be on the cards for the Hatters after the Stags deprived nine-man Luton a Wembley final in the FA Trophy with a 118th-minute equaliser at Kenilworth Road last month.

Mansfield were outspoken in the wake of their aggregate win, but Brabin believes it is all water under the bridge.

He said: “It’s always going to be a little bit more hostile (when you’re away).

“They’ve won the game, got through to the final and it’s a bit more of nothing to be honest.

“We’ve certainly forgotten about it. We are focusing on ourselves and will meet the challenge head on.”

And even though a play-off place looks beyond them, Brabin believe Mansfield’d players have plenty to play for with Wembley places up for grabs.

Neither does he think the fact that they have played Thursday, Tuesday and Saturday will affect them too much.

He added: “They have a decent squad of players and they all have something to play for.

“I don’t think they can afford to take it easy, especially with a Wembley final at stake.

“As a player you prefer it when the games are coming thick and fast.”
