Lockyer finds it 'mind-boggling' how Luton were beaten by Swans

Town defender Tom Lockyer declared it ‘mind-boggling’ how his side came away from the Liberty Stadium empty-handed following the 2-0 defeat at Swansea City on Saturday.

After conceding inside two minutes, the Hatters had by far the better of the contest in Wales, with George Moncur hitting the post, while Luke Berry missed a sitter in the first half.

In the second period, even when Matty Pearson was sent off, Glen Rea had a header cleared off the line, as Andre Ayew’s late strike, with Town pushing men forward, condemning them to a loss.

Lockyer said: “I’m not sure how we’ve lost 2-0, not sure how we haven’t won, I’m scratching my head a bit to be honest.

“I thought we played some good stuff even with the 10 men.

"We were all over them, so I’m scratching my head as we’ve not won the game, to lose 2-0 is massively disappointing.

“We said beforehand, to start well and then to go a goal down is a kick in the teeth.

"It gives us a massive mountain to climb, but if there’s a way to lose games, that’s a way to lose games, not the performance we put in against Cardiff (4-0 defeat).

“I don’t think we can do a lot more apart from put the ball in the goal at least once, so I'm not sure how we haven't done that.

“It's one of them, how we've not won is a bit mind-boggling, so to get a 2-0 defeat, it hurts.”

Town had the ascendancy from pretty much the minute manager Nathan Jones altered his formation, swapping to a three at the back, which allowed Luton to wrest control from their hosts.

It saw Lockyer alongside Pearson and Glen Rea at the back, as the Welsh international continued “It’s not something we’ve actually worked on, but we've changed shape to match them up and I don't think they had the solutions for us when we did that.

"We were the better team and and I don't know how to say that we haven't won the game.

"We created so many clear-cut chances and had so much possession, that change of shape, it is what it is.

"It obviously worked when we did it as we put in a performance like that, but if there's a way to lose a game, that's going to be it today.”

Despite the chances that came and went Luton's way, Lockyer wasn't about to criticise any of his team-mates for failing to find the net, adding: "I’m not going to stand here pointing fingers at the other front players, as at the end of the day we conceded two goals.

"There's some clear cut chances, we've had one cleared off the line second half as well, and at that stage they've got 10 men behind the ball.

"Us with 10 men, we're leaving two for two at the back, which you've got to do if you're chasing the game and Andre Ayew’s got the type of quality to punish people for every little mistake, he can do that, so no qualms really.

"But if we’re going to lose a game, that will probably be the way we want to do it.”
