Luton boss Nathan Jones will weigh up whether to offer former Chelsea, Fulham and Eintracht Frankfurt defender Michael Hector a contract at Kenilworth Road.

The 30-year-old, who is a free agent, has been training with the Hatters in recent weeks having been released by Fulham in the summer after playing just seven times as Cottagers won promotion to the Premier League last term.

He was pictured at Luton’s open training session at Kenilworth Road on Tuesday morning, and when asked about the chances of him joining permanently, Jones, who left a space open when registering his 25-man Championship squad to strengthen his back-line is possible, said: “He’s someone we’ve been looking at, we know he has quality, trouble is, how up to speed is he?

“We’ve wanted to bring him in just to get a gauge of where he is and once we get that then we can maybe make a decision.

“But he’s definitely a player with massive pedigree, Premier League and loads of Championship experience, so if we do decide to do something then it might be a calculated gamble.

"This is why we kept something open so that if we really needed someone then these are the types of players we can bring in.

“We’ll definitely make a decision by the international break but let's see.”

The Jamaican international made 40 appearances for the Cottagers during his two-and-a-half years at Craven Cottage, having signed for an undisclosed fee thought to be around £8m from Chelsea in 2019.

Hector, who started out with Reading as a youngster, has also had spells with Shrewsbury, Cheltenham and Aberdeen, before moving to Stamford Bridge, where spent most of his time out on loan.

He spent the 2016-17 campaign at Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt, with moves to Hull City and Sheffield Wednesday as well, as Jones added: “He’s been in here for five or six (training sessions) now, he’s been here for a little while.

"We've seen his quality already, that’s never in doubt, but it’s literally the rest of it.

“He has massive experience and you can see the quality in him, we just need to see how far off he is playing in a Championship football game.”
