Marriot himself notched twice, with Paul Benson also finding the net, as on whether other clubs would take notice of the result, he said: “Maybe, I think if they hear Luton have turned over Bristol 3-1, they’ll be thinking we need to watch out for them.

“We’d rather think about ourselves than the opposition though, we know what we’re capable of and we’ll see what happens.”

Although it was Marriott who took the headlines after the match, opening his account for the club in clinical style with two excellent finishes, he felt the defence deserved plenty of credit for keeping their pleasing on the eye opponents out.

He continued: “We were very solid, we’ve done a lot of back four work at the training ground and no matter what the combination is, whether we play a three or whether we play a four, everyone knows their jobs

“That’s good as you need it at this level. If your back four is solid, it gives your midfield and forwards the license to go on, knowing you’re not going to be counter-attacked and conceding the next minute.”

Another aspect that impressed Marriott was the depth in the squad as despite making wholesale changes, Town still came out on top against a side who romped to the League One title last year, and had swapped only two players themselves.

He said: “We made eight changes and it just shows no matter whether you’re in the squad, match day eleven, on the bench or in the stands, everyone is capable of playing their part and doing their bit.

“That’s the best thing to have when you want to have cup run and do well in the league as well.

“You can’t complain with beating Championship opposition too. They just got promoted last season, they’ve got a lot of motivation, have been doing quite well, but you can’t beat us at Kenilworth Road, I’ll tell you that.”

Marriott took his goals too with the air of a seasoned striker, and describing the double salvo, he added: “For the first, I think Cam (Cameron McGeehan) put the ball down the side and I’ve just cut back on to my right, took a touch and luckily found the bottom corner,

“It was a bit of a relief as well as I had a chance just before that where I hit it straight at the keeper which I was a bit disappointed about, but after the first goal I let myself off for that one.

“The second, fortunately for me, the centre half slipped. I’ve just nipped in front of him and once I got my body in front of him, he couldn’t do anything to me or else he would have fouled me and it would have be a penalty.

“I’ve taken it on my left foot and thankfully finished it, so was happy with that one as well.

“We put in a very good performance and luckily I got on the scoresheet a couple of times which is good.”
