McGeehan not dwelling on late miss

Having already opened his account for the season with a fine strike into the bottom corner, the former Norwich youngster had an even better chance to find the net in the closing stage.

With Town leading 2-1, U’s keeper Sam Slocombe could only parry Jonathan Smith’s low drive back out with McGeehan first on the scene, only to balloon his shot into the home stand.

Oxford went up the other end to equalise moments later through sub Pat Hoban as McGeehan said: “I thought I was offside, but I should have scored or squared it to (Paul) Benson.

“I was a good shot from Smudge, and I should have put my head down, focussed a bit more or at least looked up and got it to Benson.

“The keeper made it hard. He came right out and the only place I could put it was high, but I just overcooked it.

“There were a number of chances we missed, which was a shame, but the games will keep coming and we’ll keep getting our touch back.

“It’s only the second game, so hopefully I’ll put those chances away as the season goes on. It’s a bit disappointing and not the best thing when you lose a goal late on, but we’ll crack on and I don’t want to dwell on it.”

Fellow goalscorer Luke Wilkinson was certainly not attaching any blame to the summer signing from Carrow Road either, adding: “I think it was a bit of an angle and he just tried to lift it into the roof of the net over the keeper as the keeper’s come out. Unfortunately it’s gone and high and wide this time.”
