McNulty a realist over Town’s play-off chances

Luton host Stevenage needing an unlikely set of results to leapfrog seventh-placed Plymouth Argyle into the final berth.

The Greens are three points ahead of Town and travel to title-chasing Shrewsbury with an eight goal advantage as McNulty said: “I’m a realist and I think its gone.

“Stevenage is going to be a tough game, they’re in the play-offs themselves.

“They’re not going to come here and let the game be wide open.

“We’d have to go and win four or five-nil and I’m not saying it’s out of the question, but it’s going to be a really big ask.

“If you’re a betting man, you wouldn’t bet on it, but we’ll be going out on Saturday to try and win.

“Occasions like this, we’ve got to go to and enjoy. It makes us stronger as a team and individuals and as a club.”

Town blew their best chance of taking the run-in down to the final game when they lost out 1-0 to Southend United on Saturday.

McNulty continued: “We’re disappointed, deflated, I thought we played well and weathered everything they threw at us.

“We knew a point would have done us going into the last game.

“They’ve (Plymouth) got a tough game going away to Shrewsbury, we knew that a point would give us a chance.

“We threw everything at them, to be fair to them, they defended really well.”

Although Town looked like they could win automatic promotion for large parts of the season, they suffered injuries to key players which hampered their chances.

However, McNulty wasn’t interested in using that as an excuse, adding: “We have had lot of disruptions and suspensions and stuff that didn’t go our way, but we could stand here all day and make excuses.

“We’re not that type of people and I don’t think he (boss John Still) is either.

“We’ll never use that as an excuse, we had a squad, had the disruptions and we’re still in the top three, top seven.

“Those players we did have out, would have made the squad stronger and the team better but they were injured and we couldn’t use them, that’s just the way it goes.”
