McNulty relieved to cut out the mistakes

After keeping a record 23 clean sheets on their way to the Conference title last year, Hatters only managed one in their first six games this term.

McNulty admitted that was down to some mistakes on his part, but believes they are now adjusting to life in League Two, after going 292 minutes without conceding.

He said: “I think we started quite similar to last season, but this time we were conceding goals.

“We’ve been sloppy, me on a couple of occasions and the difference between this level and the Conference, you make one mistake and you seem to get punished a lot more.

“So you can’t make those stupid mistakes and give these strikers a chance as they will take them at this level.

“It’s nice to be getting clean sheets. We work on it two or three times a week in training, the gaffer rams it down our throats and tells us what he wants.

“It’s good that the hard work that we’re doing in training is paying off and get away from those stupid mistakes that we were making.”

Although Hatters have only scored six goals in the league so far, McNulty doesn’t think they will have any problems hitting the net.

He continued: “We’ll be fine. We’re always going to create chances and score goals if we’re keeping clean sheets at the back.”

McNulty was also quick to pay tribute to Town’s travelling army of 2,050 fans at Cambridge, the eighth highest following in all four divisions at the weekend.

He said: “We can’t thank them enough. They’ve backed us and have been like that every away game.

“We went to Shrewsbury and were terrible against Shrewsbury, but they were still there in their numbers and singing their hearts out.

“We just need to stay with us and come on this journey with us as there’s going to be a few more ups and downs yet, although we’ve got a lot of confidence in this squad.”

Match-winner Mark Cullen, who scored the rebound after his penalty was saved by Chris Dunn was also delighted for the visiting supporters.

He said: “Weve got a lot of fans following us, to get three points and send them home happy to have a good weekend, it’s great when you do that.

“They were clearly enjoying themselves and it’s for them isn’t it really?”

Cullen is now hoping Town can extend their unbeaten run to four games against Oxford United this weekend.

He added: “We won the last game at home and had two good strong away performances this week. So we go back to Kenilworth Road and look to get another three points.”
