Money felt indiscipline cost his side

The hosts were reduced to 10 men as on-loan midfielder Tom Naylor was sent off on his debut after 55 minutes for a two-footed lunge on Jim Stevenson.

Money himself was also a culprit as he had to be led away by U’s director of football Jez George after losing his temper and getting involved in an untimely spat with Hatters chief John Still on the final whistle.

The ex-Hatters chief said: “As we’ve done since I’ve been here, we’ve had them really at full stretch to cope with us, but we don’t seem to be able to turn those performances into results against them.

“Let’s hope the return game is a little bit kinder. We’ll have to play with a bit more discipline than that.

“I thought it was a feisty affair, but, I have to say, we got caught up in it rather than the other way around and a piece of ill discipline has cost us.”

Cambridge had been the better side up until Naylor’s dismissal, with Luton taking full advantage, winning the game through Mark Cullen as the striker netted the rebound after his penalty was saved.

Money added: “The red card does change it. Even with the red I still thought we would have enough to at least walk off the pitch with a point.

“You get days like that when you give away a penalty, then the goalkeeper saves the penalty and it goes straight back to the goalscorer and you start to think it’s not our day.

“I thought we were very good, I can’t say anything other than praise as I thought we were terrific.”
