Morgan-Smith is reaping the rewards

HARD work is paying off for striker Amari Morgan-Smith as he grabbed both goals during Tuesday night’s 2-0 win at AFC Telford, writes Mike Simmonds.

The former Ilkeston forward is now leading the scoring charts with six this season and said: “I’m working hard in training, and it seems that when I work hard things seem to fall for me. So I want to keep working hard and carry on the run.”

Manager Gary Brabin was delighted with his striker’s efforts and felt that some pre-match words had the desired result.

He said: “There were a couple of people I had to speak to and say I’ve seen you’ve probably lowered the tone in training.

“It’s taken us 10-15 minutes to get going in the last couple of games and I know one of the players responded by scoring two goals.

“I talk a bit about being ruthless in the box and to be fair to Amari he’s taken it on board and thoroughly deserved the two goals.”

Morgan-Smith certainly showcased his clinical finishing at the New Bucks Stadium as he continued: “The first I’ve flicked over and thought Robbie (Willmott) was going to be at the back post so thought I could get in there.

“For the second I gambled really. I made sure I was on the back stick as the gaffer always says make sure you’re on the back stick. It was a great ball from Jake (Howells) and (Danny) Crowy did well too.

“The gaffer is saying we’ve got to be more ruthless in both areas and that’s what I did.”

With six goals in eight games, Morgan-Smith is aleady just two away from last season’s tally, but like all strikers, is keeping his targets quiet.

He said: “I have got a target to Christmas and then a target for afterwards, but I don’t like saying. Hopefully I can hit my target at Christmas and then go from there.”

One thing that might stand in Morgan-Smith’s way is an impending suspension as he picked up his fourth booking in midweek for kicking the ball away.

He added: “I think I’ve got to be a good boy now for the rest of the season. I don’t worry about that too much though.

“I’ll take that one as I was trying to waste a bit of time to help us get the three points.”
