Neilson denies Walker set for York switch

HATTERS assistant manager Alan Neilson has poured cold water on rumours that striker Jason Walker is on his way to York City, writes Mike Simmonds.

Speculation has been rife this this week linking Walker, who has scored five goals for Town since joining from Barrow in November, with a move to Bootham Crecent.

Minstermen manager Gary Mills confirmed his interest in the forward, who saw his last-minute header against AFC Wimbledon in the play-off final cannon off the post.

Mills said: “From the moment I came to York City, I wanted to bring him here.

“He went to Luton, but he’s a player I would love to get to York.

“We’ll have to wait and see whether we can do that.

“I’m certain they would want a fee and it could be dependent on how much they want but, along with the chairman, we are working hard to bring him in and I believe he would complete our frontline if we are successful.”

But that wasn’t the case according to Neilson, who said: “That’s the first I’ve heard of it.

“I’ve met with the gaffer, but we haven’t spoken about any offers for our players.

“There’s been no speculation about any of our players at all and of course we want to keep as many players as we can.

“He (Walker) played the majority of the games and in a lot of the games he did very well, so he’s a part of our squad.”

Both Adam Newton and Lloyd Owusu have been released by Town, while Rushden forward Aaron O’Connor has joined on a free transfer.

There is no further news regarding Town’s other out of contract players, including French winger Claude Gnakpa, but Neilson confirmed they are still looking to add to the squad.

He said: “We’re still renegotiating with some of our players who are out of contract and we’re looking to add to our squad from last season.”

Although the new campaign is still over two months away, Neilson confirmed they were gearing up for pre-season.

He added: “We’re in the process of trying to sort out our whole pre-season.

“If we’re going to go away, if we’re not going to go away.

“We’re very close to getting sorted out so hopefully there will be some news in the next couple of weeks.”
