Neilson hails new Cobblers signing

NEW signing Dean Beckwith will mix cultured defending with his evident physical attributes according to Luton Town assistant manager Alan Neilson, writes Mark Wood.

The 6ft 3ins centre-half signed a two-year deal with the Hatters on Tuesday following his release by League Two Northampton Town.

Neilson revealed the Hatters reacted quickly to the news, saying: “We’ve had good reports and he plays a little bit.

“When we heard he was released from Northampton we were on the phone straight away.

“He is 6ft 3ins, he is good in the air and passes with both feet.

“He is a good addition to our squad. We still have contract offers in to our centre-halves from last year. We are really pleased with the signing as there were a few other teams after him.”

The 27-year-old has more than 200 senior appearances to his name and Neilson believes it was again the pull of Luton’s magnificent support that helped lure Beckwith to the club.

He said: “We all know Luton Town is a big club and players want to play for big clubs and in front of a lot of fans.

“The fanbase here does help in our favour.

“Players know that if they come to Luton Town we will be challenging at the top of the table, pushing for promotion back to the Football League.”

More players should commit themselves to the Hatters in the near future, but with many players on holiday, Neilson admitted it was difficult to finalise deals.

He added: “I know we’ve put offers out to the players. This time of the year is quite hard because players are away on their holidays. Nailing people down at the moment is quite tricky.”
