Potts desperate to persuade Mackail-Smith to sign for Town

Hatters defender Dan Potts admits he and the rest of the squad will be in the ear of striker Craig Mackail-Smith to try and persuade him to move to Kenilworth Road permanently.

The 31-year-old played his first 90 minutes for Luton in this evening’s 0-0 draw at Hitchin Town, and followed on from his goal-scoring display at Boreham Wood with another hugely impressive performance.

A deal for the forward is by no means a foregone conclusion though, despite his close relationship with Luton boss John Still, and on trying to twist his arm to sign on the dotted line, Potts said: “I think it’s not just me in his ear, there’s a few, but he’s a good lad and knows what’s right for him.

“If it does happen, it’d be great, but we have to wait and see, that’s not up to me.

“I think that would be a really good signing if something can get sorted.

“He’s been with us from the start and he’s a top professional, you can tell that even meeting him for two weeks, even though he’s on trial, you still see he’s pushing to be the best he can be.

“He’s a senior pro, someone like him would be great for me to have around personally, it would be nice to see him in a Luton shirt.”

It was also a deal Mak O’Brien was hoping the club could push through as he added: “It’d be brilliant, he’s a top quality player, everyone has seen it in the Championship when he was playing week in week out.

“Everyone knows what kind of player he is and he would be another great addition to the squad so you’d welcome him with open arms, but that’s all up in the air though as far as I know.”
