PREVIEW: Hatters look to maintain winning run at the Hatters

THE Hatters have enjoyed much the better of recent visits to Edgeley Park, winning their last three matches, writes Mike Simmonds.

In fact you have to go back to the 1968-69 season for Luton’s last defeat when they went down 2-0 in the old Third Divison. Before then, Town were less fortunate on the road though, meaning their overall record is identical to their hosts with four wins, four defeats and two draws.

Much is expected from County this year after the high-profile appointment of former German international Dietmar Hamann.

When the club dropped out of the league last season, they were finally taken over by a consortium headed by Tony Evans which meant former manager Ray Mathais, who had only taken the job permanently on May 25, left, and Hamann came in.

There have been sweeping changes amongst the playing personnel too, with the likes of John Miles, Nick Chadwick, Martin Gritton and Ryan McCann all coming in as the club look to bounce back into the league at the first attempt.

While Hatters were bringing in Collins Samuel and Stuart Fleetwood on deadline day, the other Hatters were acquiring Aberdeen forward Michael Paton on loan until January.

Former Wrexham defender Chris Blackburn could also be a new face in the squad too as Stockport are waiting to see if they can gain international clearance in time for tonights clash which is televised live on Premier Sports.

It’s been a frustrating start to Hamann’s helm though as his side have only won one once, drawing four times and suffered their first defeat of the campaign at home to Mansfield last time out.

Team news: Jake Howells is the main injury concern for Luton after the Wales U21 international, who has been in fine form this season, went off against Hayes & Yeading in midweek.

Dan Gleeson might earn a recall if he has recovered from his ankle injury, but Shane Blackett, Freddie Murray, George Pilkington and Charlie Henry are still out. Both new signings Fleetwood and Samuel are also in contention for their first starts.

In charge: Dietmar Hamann – enjoyed an illustrious career, playing for the likes of Bayern Munich, Newcastle United, Liverpool and Manchester City, while also earning 59 caps for Germany.

Played in a World Cup Final and won the Champion’s League and FA Cup amongst other trophies with Liverpool, while also lifted the Bundesliga twice in his time in Germany.

After his playing career finished, became player coach at MK Dons, before joining Leicester in February as first team coach, and was then appointed as Stockport boss on July 5.

Opposition view: Dietmar Hamann - We’ve seen in recent games that we don’t score enough goals. It was a similar story against Mansfield, we had chances.

“We just have to keep going and hopefully in the coming games we can take our chances.”

One to watch: Nick Chadwick – striker who started his career with Everton, scoring three times in the Premier League. Never fully managed to force his way in at Goodison Park though and had loan spells at Derby and Millwall before signing for Plymouth for £250,000.

Didn’t enjoy the most prolific times at Home Park and his career has stalled somewhat since, moving to Hereford, Chester, Shrewsbury and Barrow before joining Stockport where he netted twice already.

Familiar faces: Jon Routledge. Combative midfielder who appeared for Luton on trial at the start of the season, playing 90 minutes against Airbus UK Broughton. A permanent deal didn’t materialise though and the former Wigan youngster moved to Stockport where he has started five matches.

Top goalscorers: Amari Morgan-Smith (4) - Nick Chadwick and Tom Elliott (2).

We’ve met before: Town haven’t visited Edgeley Park since the 2004-05 season when Luton enjoyed a comfortable 3-1 triumph. First half goals from Steve Robinson and Rowan Vine put Luton 2-0 ahead, before Ahmet Brkovic added another in the second half meaning Rickie Lambert’s late strike was a mere consolation.

Team: Marlon Beresford, Curtis Davies, Chris Coyne, Sol Davis, Kevin Foley, Paul Underwood, Steve Robinson (Michael Leary 74), Kevin Nicholls, Ahmet Brkovic (Keith Keane 89), Steve Howard, Rowan Vine (Gary McSheffrey 74).
