Red Dragons hoping to fire in the play-offs

LUTON Town’s Saturday opponents Wrexham look like they will be allowed to compete in the Blue Square Bet Premier play-offs this season after the Football Conference released a statement on Monday evening, writes Mike Simmonds.

Speculation had been rife that the Red Dragons would be prevented from taking part after they were recently served with a winding up order over an unpaid tax bill of around £200,000.

But the Welsh side, managed by Dean Saunders, have been confirmed as Luton’s opponents, with the first leg at the Racecourse Ground on Thursday, May 5, and the return fixture at Kenilworth Road on Tuesday, May 10.

Both games kick off at 7.45pm and will be shown live on Premier Sports TV.

A statement from the Conference read: “The matter of Wrexham Football Club and their appearance before the High Court on 11th May, (subject to an application by HM Revenue & Customs to petition the court to seek to have the club wound up), was on the agenda at the regular monthly meeting of the Board of the Football Conference held in London yesterday (Thursday, 21st April).

“In light of the club’s current position and that they are eligible at this time to seek membership of the Football League via the play-off system, the club has indicated to the Football Conference a timeline in which to ensure that the date of the High Court hearing and any decision by the court, does not cause the integrity of the play-offs to be brought into question, so enabling them to proceed without the possibility of causing disruption to the other member clubs involved.

“The Board has received from Wrexham Football Club, encouraging information that the timeline they themselves set, will be met and the Board look forward to any possible disruption being negated.

“At this time the Football Conference will not comment further and hope that the commitment made by Wrexham Football Club to the Board will not only be in their best interests but more importantly the competition.”

Speaking after the Histon match on Monday, Hatters boss Gary Brabin, who sees his side entertain Wrexham in the league on Saturday, said of the uncertainty surrounding the play-off picture: “You’ve got to be Carol Vorderman to work it out.

“We’ve just got to concentrate on ourselves.

“We’ve got a game coming up Saturday. Hopefully its been decided what the rules dictate and what is definitely going to happen before Saturday’s game so we can make a decision on how we’re going to do things.”
