Smith demands Town turn it around starting against Stags

Hatters have started this season with just one win from their opening seven games as last weekend’s 3-2 defeat to Notts County made it four losses from five.

However, Smith insists his side aren’t dwelling on the past now as he said: “We’re all massively disappointed, but a couple of wins and it can all change, so that’s what we’ll be aiming for.

“It will be a tough game, but we’ll give it everything.

“If we can start grinding a few clean sheets out, we’re definitely good for goals, especially with (Craig) Mackail-Smith, who is so dangerous up there.”

Town were defeated in the final moment on Saturday, the fourth stoppage time goal they have conceded already this term.

Smith didn’t think it was affecting Luton’s players in the latter stages of matches though, as when asked, he said: “Not massively, no, I think everyone was shouting ‘switch on’ at the time.

“We always analyse the games, look at the goals and see how we can improve.

“The gaffer will voice his opinion about that too, but it’s just one of them, one ball and bang he’s in.

“It wasn’t playing on my mind, I was more thinking about can we get the winner as Mackail-Smith was running them ragged up there.”

Smith also believes that Hatters’ fans need repaying for their unwavering support as almost 1,700 travelled to Meadow Lane.

He added: “At 2-0 I didn’t hear any grumbles, they still got behind us and that’s typical of the fans here.

“I was just disappointed they went away with nothing as they deserved something for their support.”

Town will be without Scott Cuthbert for this weekend’s clash with the Stags after his red card against the Magpies.

Although the summer signing was the last man when he brought down Izale McLeod, Smith felt his dismissal was a touch harsh, adding: “It’s hard to have a go at Scott as he’s been an absolute warrior since he’s come to the club, probably been our best player this season.

“It’s not just his fault, the whole team takes responsibility for the goal, you can’t just point your finger at one person.

“I thought it was a bit harsh to send him off, it was a tangle of legs.

“I don’t think he actually meant to bring him down, I think he was going for the ball, but maybe the referee has got to give it.”
