Still blast for ‘shocking’ Wall

The striker has been restricted to a role on the bench this season, but many supporters were calling for him to come on against Plymouth Ayrgle last weekend with Town desperate for a late equaliser.

However, Still opted for midfielder Jim Stevenson as his final change and explained his reasons during this afternoon’s press conference.

He said: “He played in a development game last midweek and was shocking.

“If supporters want me to play players who have been shocking in development games, I’m not going to, to get in the team you’ve got to play well.

“He did a lot better this week, but he’s been shocking and hasn’t played well enough, he knows he hasn’t played well enough.

“Sometimes you have to be very careful, as you can get put into false sense of security when you go that’s not working and say, he’s not playing well, but I’ll play him anyway.

“Then he doesn’t do well and his confidence suffers because of it and I don’t think that’s right.

“We had it with Andre (Gray) last year and when he came into the team we bought him into the team when he was firing in training and firing in development games, so he was ready.

“It’s very important when you do that as confidence is a big thing and Alex didn’t have that.”

Wall is available for this weekend’s clash with Cheltenham Town despite being red carded for dissent during Hatters’ development game against Bournemouth on Tuesday.

Still didn’t mince his words on what he thought about the dismissal either, adding: “All it shows is what a silly boy Alex Wall is.

“To get sent off for a mis-timed tackle, that happens, get sent off for denying a goalscoring opportunity, because they’re all football things.

“To get sent off for a comment to the referee, he has to learn what professional means.”
