Still blasts ‘naive’ defending

A disappointed Still said: “We thought it was going to be a really difficult defending first half wind-wise and we defended naively, made too many errors.

“We didn’t play to the conditions and we spoke about it before the game about playing in the other team’s half, we didn’t do that.

“We never looked secure and didn’t really give ourselves a chance to attack as we weren’t secure enough.

“It was poor defending and that’s not just the back people, anyone in our defending third, we were well beat

“There were too many individual errors, we weren’t collective. If we had have been, we’d have given ourselves a chance in the second half as we looked better with 10 men than we did in the first half with 11.

“We had a walk around and we spoke about how difficult it would be defending that end, but we didn’t listen, so I have to take responsibility for that.

“I’m the manager, people were given instructions and didn’t follow instructions, but I have to look at that myself and find out why that was the case.”

Town concede all three goals from set-pieces at the Globe Arena, a personal bugbear of Still as he continued: “They scored three goals from restarts, so what does that tell us?

“We conceded against Bury from a restart, the game before that, we conceded a goal from a restart against Burton and we don’t concede from restarts.

“So that tells me something and I’m really disappointed by that.

“We’ve rattled on and rattled on about not giving away silly free kicks and restarts when you haven’t got to.

“It’s not been good enough. You’re going to concede from restarts because everyone does and it’s a crazy saying, but if you don’t concede from restarts you get promotion, you do

“We work so diligently on these, so we’ll have to get back to work on Monday.”

Returning striker Ross Lafayette was also frustrated to see all three goals coming from dead ball situations.

He added: “The gaffer stresses to us, if you concede from set-pieces you win games. We conceded three goals from set plays and it was ultimately our downfall, so it was a frustrating day.

“The last one unfortunately it was my man who scored. I went to the ball when I should have stayed on my man, so it’s fine margins but we’ll work on that on the training pitch and come back stronger.”
