Still confirms Cuthbert will lead the side for now

Luton Town boss John Still is yet to decide who will take over the captain’s armband on a permanent basis after skipper Steve McNulty’s departure this afternoon.

Scott Cuthbert led the side at Crawley Town on Saturday and will retain the role for tomorrow night’s visit of Leyton Orient.

However, on who will have the role full time going forward, Still said: “We gave it to Scott on Saturday and we’ll leave it there for the minute.

“Let’s see, we’re not 100 per cent sure but I like defenders to be captains.”

Fellow centre half Luke Wilkinson is another option for Still as he continued: “He is, absolutely. It was almost an easy decision (on Saturday) as Scott has been a captain, but we’ll leave it a few games and see where it is.”

With McNulty such a huge influence both on and off the field at Kenilworth Road, Still challenged the other players in the squad to now step up and take his mantle.

He added: “In my time here, he’s been a big part of getting up and establishing us last year as a good club on the pitch.

“This is football, the king is dead, long live the king. Steve did an unbelievable job here, I really mean this, a fantastic job.

“He became quite rightly a little bit of a cult hero because of his ability which I think people who don’t really know him are quite shocked at how good a player he really is.

“We’ve all been delighted with his performances here, so he’ll be a loss, but like every door that closes it opens for someone else to come in and be that character.

“Someone else has a chance to impose their self on it, because it’s difficult sometimes to oppose yourself when there’s someone more imposing if that makes sense.

“So that’s something we need to look at and try and push people through to impose their selves. We have some big characters and some good characters and their character has to start coming through now.”
