Still doesn’t see a lack of confidence within Hatters squad

The Hatters have lost six out of their previous seven matches and entertain a Chairboys side with the best away record in the league, last tasting defeat over five months ago, on October 21.

But Still said: “It’s been like every week, we go in, train well, the boys are bright.

“Sometimes people say confidence seems a bit down, but we looked like we always do, bright, lively and we’ve got all the things done we’d like to get done and are looking forward on the game.

One thing that Still has pinpointed that has been affecting his side though was basic errors, while they also haven’t scored the first goal since the 2-0 win over Accrington five games ago.

He continued: “The first goal in games is vital. If you score the first goal in 46 games you’d get promotion. It’s really, really important, so lets hope we can get it.

“I’ve watched the games back though and we played our best football when we’ve been behind at Wimbledon and against Morecambe. We played well at Portsmouth anyway, and played our best football second half away to Newport.

“We as a staff feel like individual mistakes are costing us. We’re not giving ourselves a chance to get a foothold, conceding goals that are too easy, individually, not collectively.

“When you do that, that that can knock people a little bit when things aren’t going great, but by and large, we’ve responded to going behind in games, that’s been the only pleasing aspect of it.”

A lack of goals has been hurting the Hatters too, with just 43 to their name in the league this term.

Although denied a number of penalties in that time, and hitting the woodwork twice against Newport, Still wasn’t looking to blame misfortune for their poor return.

He added: “We haven’t scored enough goals, but we’ve come back twice and scored two goals at Wimbledon and normally the teams I have who score two goals away from home would win. We scored two goals against Morecambe, we would win, but we’ve made errors that are individual.

“I don’t think we’ve been unlucky, I just think people concentrate and work hard at what they do and I’m not sure that every individual would be as happy with their performance as they would like to be.

“If I’m a boxer fighting 12 rounds, win 11 rounds and there’s 30 seconds left of the last round and I’m winning that as well, but I put my guard down and someone hits me on the chin and knocks me out, I’ve got beat.

“So all those 11 rounds make no difference. Football can be like that too.

“As a player you can be the best player on the pitch, make one mistake and you’re beat. That’s what we’ve tried to work hardest with the players on the training groujnd, their skills and understanding how to play in certain areas.”
