The 33-year-old, who has won eight caps for his country, is now a free agent after being released by Crystal Palace this week.

Speaking after tonight’s goalless draw with Shrewsbury Town, Still, who has seen his side score just three goals in their last four games, said: “We need things to settle down for him. We will talk again, if that works out, it works out. If it doesn’t, there are one or two other targets.

“But we’ll have to wait on those targets as well, it’s as simple as that.

“We know he’s fit, we know he can score goals, he needs a little bit of time to decide really what he wants to do.

“I’m pretty comfortable with the knowledge that if he wants to play football again, he will do.”

It’s not just Johnson that Still is pursuing though during the transfer window as he expects there to be more additions to go with the arrival of AFC Bournemouth forward Jayden Stockley on loan.

He added: “We have targets, in all areas, just in case we need them.

“But it’s important you get the right ones and not anyone as I’m not going to take anyone.

“I have a way of doing it, I know what I’m doing and I’ll do that. It’s been very successful so far as 18 months ago, we were ninth, 10th in the Conference.

“Well we’re a Football League club now, up there playing all the best teams and not getting beat, and winning.

“We’ve put ourselves in a good position and it’s our way and we’ll carry on. When the right people become available, that we think are right for us, we’ll put ourselves out and try to bring them in.”
