Still has no plans to retire any time soon

There had been talk in the past that the manager could possibly retire at his current age of 65, but speaking to the press this afternoon, he confirmed his intentions to see out his contract which runs until next summer.

Still said: “From me, I’ll be here until my contract ends, which is this season and next season.

“Forget results, people say to me, that I said that when I was 65, I would finish and they’re absolutely right, that was always on my mind, to finish at 65.

“But what I actually said was, when I felt the job that I was doing was the right time and the right job and the right place to put a line under, that will be the time.

“I wasn’t looking to go out on a high, everyone clapping you. In my own mind, when I can look at the thing that I do and go ‘now is the right time.’

“At my last club, I could have left numerous times, but I could never find what I thought was the right time as I always felt there was something to do.

“This came up and I wanted to do it, a wise man could have said to me, ‘you’ve got them promotion now, why don’t you leave?’

“But I knew that the job wasn’t finished. Having got up and seen quite a few clubs who had done it, gone up, but gradually they start to fall, York and now Fleetwood, I wanted to stabilise this club and look at it and go this club has either gone on again and can consolidate or is now going in the right direction.

“I believe that this club in my time does have two promotions, I really do believe that. If it hasn’t got two promotions, then it’s all set to get the next one. Now whether would be at the end of this season or next season, I don’t know because it hasn’t come.

“If anyone else decides my time is up, I can’t influence that, so it just doesn’t enter my head because it’s not my job.

“If I was to think my time was up, I’d go ‘my time is up’ and if the club ever think my time is up, they’d ‘say your time is up’, and I’ve got no issues with that as that’s the game that you’re in.

“So that’s (retiring) not anything that’s on my mind at the moment, at the end of the season it might, but not now.”
