Still may continue with 3-5-2 formation

Town used the system against Newport County AFC in the FA Cup to excellent effect last weekend, winning 4-2, with Jake Howells in particular excelleng at wingback.

It may be the case that he sticks with it today as speaking on Thursday, Still said: “Mick’s (Micky Adams, Rovers boss) using wingbacks which he doesn’t normally, so he’s gone in and thought this is the right formation for the group of players I’ve got.

“I won’t be shocked if they play with three centre halves and wingbacks.

“When a team plays a system that they might consider a strength, sometimes it’s easier to match up.

“That’s why we’ve toyed with a few different formations and when we’ve had to play with three centre halves as we did against Cheltenham, we won the game.

“When we changed to three centre halves against Bury, we got the equaliser to get us back in the game.

“On Saturday we played a team on a great run, lets not kid ourselves, they weren’t struggling. They came here fully confident and we’ve scored four goals.”

On how he felt his tactics worked against the Exiles, he continued: “We have messed around a little bit in training and we feel that when we need to use it, we can use it.

“We haven’t got it off 100 per cent, but if we keep doing a day every week on it, we’ll get better on it.

“We keep getting dragged over a little bit at times, but I can’t moan too much.”

Although Town conceded twice for the first time in 12 games, Still didn’t feel that playing with three centre halves made them less solid at the back.

He added: “I don’t think so, they (Newport) got a very, very good goal on Saturday.

“One was disappointing, it was unlike us, the header from close in on goal.

“But it was unlike us to give away a penalty at Exeter when we played the normal back four, so I don’t look very closely into that.

“The reasons you can concede goals can be poor organisation and mistakes.

“Well we didn’t concede a goal really on poor organisation, we conceded on a mistake, someone not marking when they should have marked.

“Had we played four at the back, the same person in the same place might have made the same mistake, so I’m not overly concerned by that.”
