Still urges Hatters to break York habit

Luton have only won one of the last 12 meetings between the two sides, that a 5-0 success at Kenilworth Road in January 2011, when York had keeper Michael Ingham sent off after 15 minutes, with Town midfielder Jonathan Smith then at York, also dismissed late on.

When asked if the Minstermen’s hoodoo meant anything to him, Still said: “No. Not anything for me personally.

“If York were to beat Luton, it wouldn’t have anything to do with being a bogey side, I don’t hold anything on that at all.

“All I look at is the best team on the day has got the best chance of winning. We’ve just got to try and be the best side.

“It’s like habits. Something can become a habit, so do you just accept it’s going to happen? Or do something to break it?

“If you’ve got a bad habit, you want to do something to break it, so not beating York often enough is a bad habit and we need to find a way of breaking it.”

York have struggled badly this season, with Nigel Worthington resigning in October and swiftly replaced by Russ Wilcox, but the former Scunthorpe boss has only won four games so far.

Still continued: “I know Russ Wilcox very well, he’s a very good manager and I know he’ll be working hard to change their fortunes.

“Their season consists of not great results with two different managers, but Russ may keep working away and the last games may be good and they stay up.

“At the moment it’s not good for York, but I know teams down there can go on a good run and win five out 12, which is a decent return when you’re struggling.

“They may be good enough to do that, but we’ll wait and see.”

Despite a poor run of six games without a win dropping the Minstermen into the bottom two, Still knows full well they will raise their game at Kenilworth Road this evening.

He said: “The thing that we’ve learned since we’ve been here and maybe I’ve learned it as well, whoever plays Luton raise their game.

“That’s even more remarkable for what we’ve done as I do feel that we are a club because of our support and what its done in previous years, people come to play Luton in front of big crowds home and away and raise their game.

“We’ve dealt with that really, really well. It’s the same for York, they’ll come here, be really positive, really strong with a nothing to lose attitude.

“That makes them a dangerous opponent.”

Luton are unbeaten in 11 league matches in front of their own fans though as Still added: “Our own form is good, our own form is consistent, so hopefully we can put on a good performance and get three points because the top seven, eight is reasonably tight.

“We’d like to think our form home and away is consistent, we don’t get beat home or away as we’ve only got beaten five times all season.

“To go away and pick points up, win at home most of the time, is a recipe for success and we hope that can continue.”
