Town striker Danny Hylton has been backed to hit the scoring trail again this season by team-mate George Moncur.

The 31-year-old is yet to find the net for Luton since March 23, 2019 now, a run spanning 24 games, after he missed the majority of last season through injury.

Hylton had a number of great chances to end that lengthy drought during Saturday’s 1-0 FA Cup win over Readying, missing two crosses in the first half.

He then spurned another wonderful opportunity after the break, unable to diver Ryan Tunnicliffe’s header from Joe Morrell’s cross over the line from close range, Royals keeper Luke Southwood clinging on.

However, Moncur has every faith the forward, who has netted 58 times in 142 appearances for the club, will come good, saying: “Danny Hylton is different gear off the field and on the field.

“I think he’s a great target man, he’s got real good ability and it’s just sometimes confidence in front of goal.

“You only need one and you can get a hatful of goals, but I believe in him and I believe he’ll definitely get some goals this year.”

Manager Nathan Jones, who signed Hylton from Oxford during his first spell in charge of the club, was happy with the performance of his striker, adding: “He’s gaining speed, he hasn’t played a lot of football, so that’s what we’ve got to be careful about.

“He’s gaining momentum and some people like James Collins for example have had a lot of rhythm, they’ve played season after season after season.

"Danny has been curtailed as he had injuries, so he missed a lot of time.

"He’s gaining momentum, but I thought his overall performance was good in terms of he led the line, went up against them, I thought he complemented (Sam) Nombe really, really well.

"First half we were really good, we went back to the diamond, had another look at that and I thought we should have been further ahead.

"We had good opportunities, then they’ve had clear-cut chances second half, we’ve had clear-cut chances, so it’s one of those games, but it’s good to get minutes to a lot of the players."
