Town chief desperate for York clash to beat the weather

Money doesn’t want Luton playing catch-up after Christmas

LUTON Town manager Richard Money is desperate for Saturday’s Blue Square Bet Premier match to beat the weather and go ahead, writes Mike Simmonds.

The country is set to be enveloped by a second cold snap in as many weeks, with snow and ice forecast, leaving the entire sporting schedule in jeopardy.

Hatters have already seen matches at AFC Wimbledon and Forest Green Rovers fall foul of the weather, meaning they have played just three league matches since the start of November.

Speaking after Tuesday night’s 2-1 FA Trophy win at Welling United, Money said: “The way the weather forecast is, it doesn’t look great for the weekend but we certainly don’t want to lose that game as we really will be playing catch-up in the New Year.

“This winter might be a winter where we’re having to re-arrange fixtures all the way through.

“The first team trained the house down on Tuesday morning though and it was a great session.”

Although York were knocked out of the Trophy on Tuesday night with a 1-0 reverse at home to Boston United, their form has been excellent since Gary Mills took over in October.

Unbeaten in their five prior league and cup games, without conceding a goal, they have climbed up to 14th in the table.

Midfielder Alex Lawless, who is currently on loan at Town from York and isn’t allowed to play at the weekend due to the terms of his transfer, is confident Hatters can take three points.

He added: “Just before I left the new manager came in and the one thing he definitely brought in was a big work ethic. I think that’s the key to them at the minute.

“It doesn’t surprise me the run they’ve gone on, with the ability some of their players have. With the work ethic as well, I think they’ll be tough.

“But if they come at us, at home, if it turns into a counter-attacking game, then I think we’ll come out on top.”
