Town players encouraged to become long rangers

It has been noticeable in recent matches the number of efforts Luton have had from long range, with Jonathan Smith in particular coming close on more than one occasion.

Olly Lee and Cameron McGeehan have also tried their luck and when asked if it’s something they’ve worked on, boss Still said: “We have. We’ve tried to get Jonathan a touch further forward when the game is flowing, and people don’t realise he’s got a great strike on him, so we encourage him.

“Olly (Lee) we know can come up with a goal, so we encourage him to get a shot off when he can.

“All the midfield players, him, Cam has tried a few longer ones, Smudge has, Olly has. He scored a good goal away to Hartlepool and hit a terrific shot just past the post against Crawley.

“We’ve got our midfield players trying to get our shots in from distance as they’re all good strikers of the ball.”

Still also praised his midfielders for their defensive duties too as Luton have now kept three successive clean sheets in the league.

He added: “The back four has defended very well and I think the team has worked hard to defend in front of it as well.

“Smudge, Olly Lee, (Nathan) Doyle when he’s played, they’ve done their work going backwards, so that’s all important as well.

“We know we’re capable of not conceding. We’ve looked back at the goals and they’ve been a bit individual, not the unit and that’s hard to coach.

“So we’ve just worked hard on the training ground on defending and at the moment it’s clicked a little bit for us. It’s not just back four and the goalkeeper, in front of that we’ve worked very hard too.”
